St. Dymphna was the daughter of an Irish chieftain whose wife died when Dymphna was a teen. Crazed with grief, he made advances to his daughter. Dymphna fought him off and fled with a priest friend to Belgium. Her father caught up with her, beheaded the priest, and demanded that Dymphna surrender to him. When she refused, he killed her. Dymphna’s site of martyrdom is known for its miraculous healings of the mentally ill, the insane, and the possessed.
